Morning ORB FVG Trigger is a complete intraday trading framework built around:
A Morning Opening Range Breakout (ORB)
The first Fair Value Gap (FVG) after that breakout
Strict risk management and position sizing
Optional HTF trend filter (Daily / Weekly / Monthly)
Optional Daily ATR filter to avoid extreme days
The script is designed for futures / indices / FX on intraday charts up to 15 minutes and for traders who want a clean, mechanical entry framework with clear risk.
🧠 Core idea
Define a morning opening range (e.g. 09:30–09:45).
Wait for a clean breakout above/below that range.
After the breakout, wait for the first FVG in breakout direction,
confirmed by the next candle (no immediate full reclaim).
Use a chosen stop logic + R:R factor to build risk/reward boxes.
Calculate position size based on your account risk.
(Optional) Only take trades:
In the direction of the HTF EMA trend (D/W/M).
On days where the morning range is within a band of the Daily ATR.
You can also disable all signals/boxes and use the script just as a visual ORB tool.

Multiplier for the take-profit distance relative to the stop.
2.0 = TP is 2× the stop distance

Implementation details
The ORB is always calculated on 1-minute data internally, so it stays precise even on 5m/15m charts.
The script only works on intraday timeframes up to 15 minutes.
📦 2. FVG Block
Group: “FVG”
Threshold %
Minimum size of an FVG in % of price.
0 = every FVG
Higher values = only larger gaps
Auto threshold (from volatility)
If enabled, the minimum FVG size is derived from historical volatility
instead of a fixed percentage.
Allow breakout FVG partly inside ORB
Off (default): the FVG must lie fully outside the ORB.
On: the breakout FVG itself may still overlap the ORB a bit,
as long as it is the first one attached to the breakout move.
Enable FVG entry signals, boxes & alerts
On: full system – FVG detection, entry labels, risk/TP boxes, alerts.
Off: no entries, no risk/TP boxes, no alerts.
You only get the ORB and (optionally) the HTF dashboard, so you can trade your own setups.
Entry mode
Entry mode (Mid / Edge / NextOpen)
Mid – Entry at the midpoint of the FVG.
Edge – Long at the upper FVG edge, short at the lower FVG edge.
NextOpen – No limit order in the gap. Entry is placed at the next bar open after FVG confirmation.
Edge offset (ticks)
Additional offset for Edge entries:
Long:
+ticks = a bit above the FVG (more conservative)
-ticks = deeper into the FVG (more aggressive)
Short:
+ticks = a bit below the FVG
-ticks = deeper into the FVG
FVG detection logic
Uses a LuxAlgo-style 3-candle FVG pattern (gap between candle 1 and 3).
Only one FVG is taken: the first valid FVG after the ORB breakout in breakup direction.
The FVG candle is the middle bar; the script:
Detects the FVG on the previous bar.
Waits for the current bar to confirm it:
Bullish: current low must stay above the lower FVG boundary
Bearish: current high must stay below the upper FVG boundary
Only then an entry signal is generated.
🛑 3. Stop Logic
Group: “Stop Logic”
Stop mode (PrevBar / Pivot / FVG Candle)
PrevBar – Stop at the low/high of the candle before the FVG
(tight/aggressive).
FVG Candle – Stop at the low/high of the FVG candle itself
(medium).
Pivot – Stop at the most recent swing high/low
using pivotLeft / pivotRight pivots (more conservative).
Ticks (stop buffer)
Offset (in ticks) from the selected stop level.
> 0 = further away (more room, more risk)
< 0 = closer (tighter stop)
Pivot left / Pivot right
Number of candles left/right to define a swing high/low
when using Pivot stop mode.
Typical intraday values: 2–3.
The script also sanity-checks the stop:
if the calculated stop would be invalid (e.g. above entry in a long), it moves it by a minimal distance (2 ticks) to keep a valid risk.
📈 4. HTF Trend Filter (Daily / Weekly / Monthly)
Group: “HTF Trend Filter”
Enable HTF trend filter
If enabled, trades are only allowed:
Long when at least 2 of D/W/M closes are above their EMA
Short when at least 2 of D/W/M closes are below their EMA
EMA length (D/W/M)
EMA length for all three higher timeframes (Daily, Weekly, Monthly).
This helps focus entries in the direction of the dominant higher-timeframe trend.

Use daily ATR filter
If enabled, the height of the ORB (ORB high – ORB low) must be within
a band of the Daily ATR to allow any signals.
Daily ATR length
ATR period on the Daily timeframe.
Min ORB size vs ATR
Lower bound:
Example: 0.3 → ORB must be at least 0.3 × Daily ATR
0.0 = no minimum.
Max ORB size vs ATR
Upper bound:
Example: 1.5 → ORB must be ≤ 1.5 × Daily ATR
0.0 = no maximum.
If the ORB is too small (choppy) or too large (exhausted move), no breakout or FVG signal will be generated on that day.

Over Risk Info – no top dashboard; instead, the HTF trend info is shown as a label near the risk box when a new signal appears.

Show HTF trend above risk box on signal
Only relevant if Dashboard position = Over Risk Info.
When enabled, a small HTF label appears near the risk box for each new trade.

Length of that window in hours.
Example: 2.0 → FVG signals only in the first 2 hours after ORB end.

Calculate position size
If enabled, the script computes suggested mini and micro contract size for you.
Account size
Your trading account size (in account currency).
Risk mode
Percent – risk is a % of account size (Account risk %).
Fixed amount – risk is a fixed dollar amount (Fixed risk ($)).
Account risk %
Risk per trade as a percentage of account size (e.g. 1.0 for 1%).
Fixed risk ($)
Fixed risk per trade in dollars when using Fixed amount mode.
Micro factor (vs mini)
How much a micro contract is worth relative to a mini.
Example:
0.1 → one micro moves 1/10 of one mini.
Risk Info label
For each new trade, a label is shown above the boxes with:
Stop distance in price and $ risk per mini
Max risk allowed for the trade
Suggested mini and micro size

To use them:
Add the indicator to the chart.
Open the Alerts dialog → “Condition”.
Select this script and one of the alert conditions.
Set your preferred expiration and notification settings.
Alerts only fire when Enable FVG entry signals, boxes & alerts is on.
🧩 11. How the trading logic flows (summary)
Build ORB on 1-minute data during the selected session.
Optionally reject the day if ORB is outside the ATR bounds.
Wait for a breakout (close above high or below low), respecting HTF trend filter.
After breakout, look for the first valid FVG in that direction:
Outside the ORB (unless breakout FVG allowed inside)
Confirmed by the next candle (no full reclaim)
Once confirmed:
Compute entry, stop, target.
Draw risk/reward boxes and all labels.
Optionally show HTF signal label over the risk info.
Trigger alerts if enabled.
If you disable FVG signals, only steps 1–3 (plus dashboard) are effectively active.

3. Core Concept: Fair vs Unfair Zones (Analytical Only)

It is not claiming that:
Price “must” return to the band.

4. Engine Modes — How the Ribbon Is Calculated
Under “Fair-Value Engine” you can choose:
4.1 Mode 1: Range
Looks back over a chosen number of bars (default: 100).
Finds the highest high and lowest low in that window.
Defines a central “slice” of that range as the fair-value ribbon :
Range Mode: Lower Percent → bottom boundary of the slice (e.g., 30%).
Range Mode: Upper Percent → top boundary of the slice (e.g., 70%).
Effect:
The ribbon represents a middle portion of the historical range .
Above the ribbon = “Unfair High Zone” (analytical label only).
Below the ribbon = “Unfair Low Zone”.
This is purely statistical — it does not mean price is wrong or will revert.
4.2 Mode 2: VWAP + Stdev
In this mode, the central value is based on VWAP :
VWAP (Volume-Weighted Average Price) is used as the midline.
A standard deviation envelope is built around VWAP:

Use ATR Adaptive Width:
On: the band width scales with volatility.
Off: band width stays fixed based on Range or VWAP settings.
ATR Length: how many bars to use for ATR.
Reference ATR (% of price): a reference level for normal volatility.
Min Width Scale / Max Width Scale: clamps the scaling so that the band doesn’t get too narrow or too wide.
What this does (analytically):
When volatility (ATR) is higher than the reference, the band can become wider .
When volatility is lower , the band can become narrower .
This is a mathematical rescaling only and does not imply any optimal levels or performance.
6. Visual Elements — What You See on the Chart
6.1 Fair-Value Ribbon (Cloud)
The cloud between Fair Ribbon Low and Fair Ribbon High is the fair zone .
Color can be changed via “Fair Ribbon Color” .
6.2 Midline
If “Show Center Line” is enabled:
A line runs through the middle of the ribbon.
In Range mode, this is the average of the upper and lower band.
In VWAP mode, it’s essentially the VWAP-based mid.
This line is for visual reference only and makes no claims about support, resistance, or reversion.
6.3 Bar Colors
Unfair High Zone: bars are colored with Unfair High Bar Color.
Unfair Low Zone: bars are colored with Unfair Low Bar Color.
Inside the ribbon:

These colors are simply classification highlights ; they do not tell you what to do.

Suggested workflow
1) What the script does at a glance
Pulls a list of up to 15 tickers, computes a simple momentum score on each over a configurable lookback, then volatility-scales their bar-to-bar return stream to a target annualized volatility.
Ranks assets by raw momentum, selects the top 3 and bottom 3, builds positions according to the chosen mode, and gates exposure with a fast regime filter.
Accumulates a portfolio equity curve with risk and performance metrics, optional benchmark buy-and-hold for comparison, and a full alert suite.
Adds visual diagnostics: performance attribution bars, Monte Carlo forward paths, an allocation pie, and scatter plots for risk-return and factor views.
2) Momentum: definition, detection, and validation
Momentum is the tendency of assets that have performed well to continue to perform well, and of underperformers to continue underperforming, over a specific horizon. You operationalize it by selecting a horizon, defining a signal, ranking assets, and trading the leaders versus laggards subject to risk constraints.
Signal choices . Common signals include cumulative return over a lookback window, regression slope on log-price, or normalized rate-of-change. This script uses cumulative return over lookback bars for ranking (variable cr = price/price - 1). It keeps the ranking simple and lets volatility targeting handle risk normalization.
How to know momentum is present .
Leaders and laggards persist across adjacent windows rather than flipping every bar.
Spread between average momentum of leaders and laggards is materially positive in sample.
Cross-sectional dispersion is non-trivial. If everything is flat or highly correlated with no separation, momentum selection will be weak.
Your validation should include a diagnostic that measures whether returns are explained by a momentum regression on the timeseries.
Recommended diagnostic tool . Before running any momentum portfolio, verify that a timeseries exhibits stable directional drift. Use this indicator as a pre-check: It fits a regression to price, exposes slope and goodness-of-fit style context, and helps confirm if there is usable momentum before you force a ranking into a flat regime.
3) Volatility targeting: purpose and implementation here
Purpose . Volatility targeting seeks a more stable risk footprint. High-vol assets get sized down, low-vol assets get sized up, so each contributes more evenly to total risk.
Computation in this script (per asset, rolling):
Return series ret = log(price/price ).
Annualized volatility estimate vol = stdev(ret, lookback) * sqrt(tradingdays).
Leverage multiplier volMult = clamp(targetVol / vol, 0.1, 5.0).
This caps sizing so extremely low-vol assets don’t explode weight and extremely high-vol assets don’t go to zero.
Scaled return stream sr = ret * volMult. This is the per-bar, risk-adjusted building block used in the portfolio combinations.
Interpretation . You are not levering your account on the exchange, you are rescaling the contribution each asset’s daily move has on the modeled equity. In live trading you would reflect this with position sizing or notional exposure.
4) Portfolio construction modes
Cross-sectional ranking . Assets are sorted by cr over the chosen lookback. Top and bottom indices are extracted without ties.
Long Only . Averages the volatility-scaled returns of the top 3 assets: avgRet = mean(sr_top1, sr_top2, sr_top3). Position table shows per-asset leverages and weights proportional to their current volMult.
Short Only . Averages the negative of the volatility-scaled returns of the bottom 3: avgRet = mean(-sr_bot1, -sr_bot2, -sr_bot3). Position table shows short legs.
Delta Neutral . Long the top 3 and short the bottom 3 in equal book sizes. Each side is sized to 50 percent notional internally, with weights within each side proportional to volMult. The return stream mixes the two sides: avgRet = mean(sr_top1,sr_top2,sr_top3, -sr_bot1,-sr_bot2,-sr_bot3).
Notes .
The selection metric is raw momentum, the execution stream is volatility-scaled returns. This separation is deliberate. It avoids letting volatility dominate ranking while still enforcing risk parity at the return contribution stage.
If everything rallies together and dispersion collapses, Long Only may behave like a single beta. Delta Neutral is designed to extract cross-sectional momentum with low net beta.
5) Regime filter
A fast EMA(12) vs EMA(21) filter gates exposure.
Long Only active when EMA12 > EMA21. Otherwise the book is set to cash.
Short Only active when EMA12 < EMA21. Otherwise cash.
Delta Neutral is always active.
This prevents taking long momentum entries during obvious local downtrends and vice versa for shorts. When the filter is false, equity is held flat for that bar.
6) Transaction cost modelling
There are two cost touchpoints in the script.
Per-bar drag . When the regime filter is active, the per-bar return is reduced by fee_rate * avgRet inside netRet = avgRet - (fee_rate * avgRet). This models proportional friction relative to traded impact on that bar.
Turnover-linked fee . The script tracks changes in membership of the top and bottom baskets (top1..top3, bot1..bot3). The intent is to charge fees when composition changes. The template counts changes and scales a fee by change count divided by 6 for the six slots.
Use case: increase fee_rate to reflect taker fees and slippage if you rebalance every bar or trade illiquid assets. Reduce it if you rebalance less often or use maker orders.
Practical advice .
If you rebalance daily, start with 5–20 bps round-trip per switch on liquid futures and adjust per venue.
For crypto perp microcaps, stress higher cost assumptions and add slippage buffers.
If you only rotate on lookback boundaries or at signals, use alert-driven rebalances and lower per-bar drag.
7) Backtest metrics and definitions
The script computes a standard set of portfolio statistics once the start date is reached.
Net Profit percent over the full test.
Max Drawdown percent, tracked from running peaks.
Annualized Mean and Stdev using the chosen trading day count.
Variance is the square of annualized stdev.
Sharpe uses daily mean adjusted by risk-free rate and annualized.
Sortino uses downside stdev only.
Omega ratio of sum of gains to sum of losses.
Gain-to-Pain total gains divided by total losses absolute.
CAGR compounded annual growth from start date to now.
Alpha, Beta versus a user-selected benchmark. Beta from covariance of daily returns, Alpha from CAPM.
Skewness of daily returns.
VaR 95 linear-interpolated 5th percentile of daily returns.
CVaR average of the worst 5 percent of daily returns.
Benchmark Buy-and-Hold equity path for comparison.
8) Performance attribution
Cumulative contribution per asset, adjusted for whether it was held long or short and for its volatility multiplier, aggregated across the backtest. You can filter to winners only or show both sides. The panel is sorted by contribution and includes percent labels.
9) Monte Carlo simulation
The panel draws forward equity paths from either a Normal model parameterized by recent mean and stdev, or non-parametric bootstrap of recent daily returns. You control the sample length, number of simulations, forecast horizon, visibility of individual paths, confidence bands, and a reproducible seed.
Normal uses Box-Muller with your seed. Good for quick, smooth envelopes.
Bootstrap resamples realized returns, preserving fat tails and volatility clustering better than a Gaussian assumption.
Bands show 10th, 25th, 75th, 90th percentiles and the path mean.
10) Scatter plot analysis
Four point-cloud modes, each plotting all assets and a star for the current portfolio position, with quadrant guides and labels.
Risk-Return Efficiency . X is risk proxy from leverage, Y is expected return from annualized momentum. The star shows the current book’s composite.
Momentum vs Volatility . Visualizes whether leaders are also high vol, a cue for turnover and cost expectations.
Beta vs Alpha . X is a beta proxy, Y is risk-adjusted excess return proxy. Useful to see if leaders are just beta.
Leverage vs Momentum . X is volMult, Y is momentum. Shows how volatility targeting is redistributing risk.
11) Asset allocation pie chart
Builds a wheel of current allocations.
Long Only, weights are proportional to each long asset’s current volMult and sum to 100 percent.
Short Only, weights show the short book as positive slices that sum to 100 percent.
Delta Neutral, 50 percent long and 50 percent short books, each side leverage-proportional.
Labels can show asset, percent, and current leverage.

Equities Daily, Long Only . Lookback 60–120, Target Vol 15–20 percent, Fees 5–10 bps, Regime filter on. Use Benchmark SPX and watch Alpha and Beta to keep the book from becoming index beta.
13) Suggested workflow
Universe sanity check . Pick liquid tickers with stable data. Thin assets distort vol estimates and fees.
Check momentum existence . Run on your timeframe. If slope and fit are weak, widen lookback or avoid that asset or timeframe.
Set risk budget . Choose a target volatility that matches your drawdown tolerance. Higher target increases turnover and cost sensitivity.
Pick mode . Long Only for bull regimes, Short Only for sustained downtrends, Delta Neutral for cross-sectional harvesting when index direction is unclear.
Tune lookback . If leaders rotate too often, lengthen it. If entries lag, shorten it.
Validate cost assumptions . Increase fee_rate and stress Monte Carlo. If the edge vanishes with modest friction, refine selection or lengthen rebalance cadence.
Run attribution . Confirm the strategy’s winners align with intuition and not one unstable outlier.
Use alerts . Enable position change, drawdown, volatility breach, regime, momentum shift, and crash alerts to supervise live runs.
Important implementation details mapped to code
Momentum measure . cr = price / price - 1 per symbol for ranking. Simplicity helps avoid overfitting.
Volatility targeting . vol = stdev(log returns, lookback) * sqrt(tradingdays), volMult = clamp(targetVol / vol, 0.1, 5), sr = ret * volMult.
Selection . Extract indices for top1..top3 and bot1..bot3. The arrays rets, scRets, lev_vals, and ticks_arr track momentum, scaled returns, leverage multipliers, and display tickers respectively.
Regime filter . EMA12 vs EMA21 switch determines if the strategy takes risk for Long or Short modes. Delta Neutral ignores the gate.
Equity update . Equity multiplies by 1 + netRet only when the regime was active in the prior bar. Buy-and-hold benchmark is computed separately for comparison.
Tables . Position tables show current top or bottom assets with leverage and weights. Metric table prints all risk and performance figures.
Visualization panels . Attribution, Monte Carlo, scatter, and pie use the last bars to draw overlays that update as the backtest proceeds.
Final notes
Momentum is a portfolio effect. The edge comes from cross-sectional dispersion, adequate risk normalization, and disciplined turnover control, not from a single best asset call.
Volatility targeting stabilizes path but does not fix selection. Use the momentum regression link above to confirm structure exists before you size into it.
Always test higher lag costs and slippage, then recheck metrics, attribution, and Monte Carlo envelopes. If the edge persists under stress, you have something robust.
USD Session 8FX - LDN & NY (TF-invariant, Live + Table)What it is
A USD strength/weakness meter for the London (08:00–08:45) or New York (15:30–16:00/16:15) session. It blends the movement of 8 markets—EURUSD, GBPUSD, AUDUSD, NZDUSD, USDCHF, USDCAD, USDJPY, XAUUSD—into one Score that is timeframe-invariant (it uses a 1-minute “boundary TF” under the hood so changing chart TF doesn’t change the math).
Core logic (simple)
During the chosen session window, it records each symbol’s start and live end prices, computes returns, optionally normalizes by ATR (volatility), applies your weights, and averages anti-USD (EUR/GBP/AUD/NZD/XAU) vs USD-base (CHF/CAD/JPY) groups.
The final Score is the normalized sum of weighted contributions:
Score > 0 → “USD Strong”
Score < 0 → “USD Weak”
At the session close it freezes (“Locked”) the results so you can review them later.
What you see
Main plot: the USD Score line (with a 0 baseline).
Optional lines: Anti-USD average vs USD-base average (post-normalization, pre-weights).
Session background shading (London silver, New York aqua).

VWAP “Trade Gate”
It confirms alignment between the USD bias and price vs VWAP for the top movers:
If USD Strong: anti-USD symbols should be below VWAP (short bias), USD-base symbols above VWAP (long bias).
If USD Weak: the opposite.
Gate = OK only if |Score| ≥ minAbsScore and at least one of the two TOP symbols is on the correct side of VWAP.
Tip: set vwapTF to an intraday value (“1”, “5”, “15”) for reliable VWAP on higher-TF charts.
Alerts
At session close: “USD Strong/Weak – session close”.
Live threshold: alerts when |Score| crosses your intraday threshold up/down.
Entry hint (Gate OK): triggers when the Gate flips from NO → OK inside the window.
If you create an alert of type “Any alert() function call”, you also get a dynamic message like:

How to use (playbook)
Choose the session (e.g., New York 15:30–16:15), keep Boundary TF = 1.
If you’re on a higher-TF chart, set vwapTF = "1" or "5".
Watch Score and Verdict; when |Score| ≥ minAbsScore, bias is meaningful.
Check Top-1/Top-2 and the Trade Gate:
If Gate = OK, use the Entry hint (e.g., “SELL EURUSD, BUY USDCHF”) as the aligned idea.
Use your own execution rules (e.g., structure, risk, stops) on the suggested symbols.
After close, review the Frozen table to validate behavior and refine thresholds/weights.
Notes & edge cases
If some markets are illiquid/holiday, a few returns may be na; the script handles that gracefully.
If ta.vwap is na on high TFs, the Gate will simply not confirm—set vwapTF intraday.
You can customize weights (e.g., reduce XAUUSD to -0.3 or similar) to suit your basket philosophy.

How it makes decisions
Cloud bias = sign of (faster EMA − slower EMA) for each cloud pair.
Example: 12>21 → fast cloud is bullish (green); 34>50 → mid cloud bullish (teal).
10m trend label = sign of (EMA12−EMA50) on the Trend TF (default 10m).
RVol = volume / sma(volume, 20); formatted as a percent and color-coded.
Practical read of the screen
Fast cloud flips (12/21) often mark short-term momentum changes; mid cloud flips (34/50) reflect swing bias.
Air Gap lines from higher TFs frequently act as support/resistance. Larger spaces between lines = “air gaps” where price can move with less friction.
RVol color tells you how “real” a move is: red/yellow often confirms momentum; blue warns of thin/liquidy bars.
DTR vs ATR shows if today’s range is stretched vs recent norm.

TASC's October 2022 edition Traders' Tips includes the second part of the "Relative Strength Moving Averages" article series authored by Vitali Apirine. This is the code that implements the Relative Strength Volume-Adjusted Exponential Moving Average (RS VA EMA) presented in this publication.
█ CONCEPTS
In his article series, the author argues that the relative strength of price, volume, and volatility can potentially be used to filter price movements and define turning points. In particular, the RS VA EMA indicator is designed to account for the relative strength of volume. Like the traditional exponential moving average (EMA) , it is a lagging trend-following indicator. The difference is that it responds more quickly.
In a trading strategy, RS VA EMA is suggested to be used in combination with EMA of the same length to determine the overall trend or in combination with RS VA EMA of a different length to identify turning points and filter price movements.
█ CALCULATIONS
The calculation of RS VA EMA is based on the concept of volume strength (VS). By definition, VS measures the difference between "positive" and "negative" volume flow. Volume is indicated as "positive" when the close is higher than the previous close and "negative" when the close is below the previous close.
The following steps are used in the calculation process:
• Calculate the volume strength (VS) of a given length.
• Multiply VS by a predefined multiplier and calculate the EMA of the resulting time series.
The values of 10,10,10 are the typical input settings for RS VA EMA, where the first parameter is the length of the moving average, the second is the length of VS, and the third is the volume strength multiplier.

In similar vein to my Combo Z Score script I have implemented one looking at oil and oil volatility. Interestingly the script out performs WITHOUT applying the EMA in longer timeframes but under performs in shorter timeframes, for example 2007 vs 2019. Likely due to the bullish nature of the past decade (by and large). You have some options on the underlying included Oil vs OVX (Best), MOVE vs OVX and VIX vs OVX. Oil vs OVX out performs Combo Z Script. Favours Spy over QQQ or derivations (SPXL etc).

Per share bitcoin estimates are adjusted by 2.0% / 365 per day from 2019 year end holdings. Calendar year 2019 ending bitcoins and shares were 261,192 bitcoins and 269,445,300 shares. From the 2019 Form 10-K: 'The Trust’s only ordinary recurring expense is the Sponsor’s Fee. The Sponsor’s Fee accrues daily in U.S. dollars at an annual rate of 2.0% of the Bitcoin Holdings.. This scripts plots the NYSE market internals charts as an indicator for an easy and full visualization of market internal structure all in one chart, useful for SPY and /ES trading
Description of the Market Internals
- TICK: NYSE stocks ticking up vs stocks ticking down, extreme values may point to trend continuation on trending days or reversal in non trending days, example of extreme values can be 800 and 1000
- ADD: NYSE stocks going up vs stocks going down, if price auctions around the zero line may be a non trend day, otherwise may be a trend day
- VOLD: NYSE volume of stocks up vs volume of stocks going down, identify clearly where the volume is going, as example if volume is flowing down may be a good idea no to place longs
- TRIN: NYSE up stocks vs down stocks ratio divided by up volume vs down volume ratio. A value of 1 indicates parity, below that the strength is on the long side, above the strength is in the short side.
A basic use of market internals may be looking for divergences, for example:
- /ES is trading in a range but ADD and VOLD are trending up nonstop, may /ES will break the range to the upside
- /ES is trading in a range and ADD and VOLD are trading around the zero line but got an extreme reading on TICK, may be a non trending day and the TICK extreme reading is at one of the extremes of the /ES range, may be a good probability trade to fade that move
- /ES is trading in a trend to the downside, ADD and VOLD too, you catch a good portion of the move but are fearful to flat and miss more gains, you see in the TICK a lot of extreme values below -800 so your're confident in the continuation of the downtrend, until the TICK goes beyond -1000 and you use that signal to go flat
Market internals give you context and confirmation, price in /ES may be trending but if market internals do not confirm the move may a reversal is on its way
Price is an advertise, you can see the real move in the structure below, in the behavior of the individual components of the market, those are the real questions:
- How many stocks are going up/down (ADD)
- How many volume is flowing up/down (VOLD)
- How many stocks are ticking up/down (TICK)
- What is the overall volume breath of the market (TRIN)
